    Astrosat
    (2012-03-23) IUCAA
Astrosat is India's first dedicated Astronomy satellite and is scheduled to launch on board the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV). It is a multiwavelength astronomy mission and will go round the earth in a low inclination equatorial orbit . It is mainly aimed at studying accreting Neutron stars and black hole sources simultaneously in different wave bands. This “simultaneous” study is important since such sources are highly time varying. We need to “see” them at different wave bands at the same time.

    Career in Astronomy and Astrophysics
    (2012-03-23) IUCAA
Since time immemorial the members of our species have looked up at the heavens and been left in wonder by the celestial objects that light up the sky. The development of science has only amplified the wonder. We now wonder about how these objects came into being and the universe in general. It is the pursuit of the challenge of answering this question and the immense satisfaction gained on finding the answer that drives people to seek a career in professional astronomy and astrophysics

    Galaxies – The “Island Universes”
    (2012-03-23) IUCAA
Galaxies are massive collections of stars. In a galaxy like our own Milky Way (shown below), there can be as many as 1011 stars! Other than stars, there is also gas and dust (inter stellar medium), dead star remnants, dark matter and a central super-massive black hole. In the universe, there are estimated to be 1011 such galaxies! One can only imagine how big the universe is!
