Abstract
Today applied mathematics in India finds itself in the no man's land between
pure mathematics and theoretical physics. History shows that mathematics which
has been invented in response to a specific problem brings a new vitality. This
lecture describes the important role that applied mathematics has played and can
continue to play and suggests ways of revitalising it in our teaching system.
